Wanderers consecutive appearances

by Michael Duffy

Philip Keogh

Philip Keogh’s dismissal in our last home game against Cork City and his resultant suspension later this month will bring to an end his current run of 42 consecutive appearances to date and any hope Philip had of overtaking Gavin Teehan’s club record of 67 consecutive appearances. Philip’s current run moves him into 10th position in Wanderers all time consecutive appearances.

Seven players have managed to make 50 or more consecutive appearances in all competitions for Wanderers since 1985. Goalkeeper Chippy Devlin was ever present in season 1985/86, and only missed the final game of the 86/87 season to set the original record of 66 games. Mick Doohan had reached the 55 game mark before he left to join Dundalk in April '93. Gavin Teehan then beat Chippy’s record beginning in October 1992 in a 1-1 Premier Division draw with Waterford United at the Carlisle Grounds and ending with a 2-1 defeat away to St. Patrick’s Athletic in August 1994.

Defender Jody Lynch was probably the most unfortunate in his attempt to break Gavin’s record, as he broke his leg in a pre-season friendly in July '99 against Crewe Alexandra while on a run of 56 consecutive appearances in all competitions. Jody does have the consolation of setting the record for consecutive League appearances, which he had set at 73 league games, not missing a league game in the period from 26th January 1997 to 2nd May 1999 (inclusive) until breaking his leg.

Last season, Philip Keogh was ever present in all competitions for Wanderers. Only five players had managed that feat before - Chippy Devlin (1985/86), Mick Doohan (twice, 1988/89 & 1992/93), Gavin Teehan (1993/94), Jody Lynch & Colm Tresson in 1998/99.
