McNaughton leaves the field

2022-11-07

Bray's 1976 Metropolitan Cup hero Paul McNaughton has died. He was 69.

Paul was a multi-code footballer, making appearances in GAA, soccer and of course rugby, in which he was capped 15 times for Ireland, and later worked as Manager of the Irish team during Declan Kidney's period in charge.

In 1976, while still a Greystones Rugby Club regular, he played with Bray Wanderers under manager Harry McCue when he was free, including the memorable Metropolitan Cup run, scoring twice in the Quarter-Final victory over Glebe North in Balbriggan, and again in the Final in Dalymount Park against Parkvilla.
